It has been a busy graduation season. Here is a sample of the t-shirt quilts I have completed for elementary through college graduates.

One of my favorite mediums to work with is baby clothing. It just doesn't get any cuter.
This memory quilt was made from the baby clothing of a now 5 year old, lovely young lady. This quilt will make you happy; take a look! One of the best things about my job is that I get to meet such nice people and they allow me a glimpse into their lives.
The quilt that I just finished, shown below, is for a woman who recently lost her husband. She brought me his favorite shirts and some special pictures. You can tell from the way they are looking at each other in the pictures that it was a great relationship. The center is a UNC Chapel Hill basketball playoff t-shirt from 1957, which they watched while on their honeymoon. What a sweet memory quilt! A client recently sent me a box of Grampa's neckties to make into this adorable Teddy Bear for her grandchild.
This is one of the cutest ways to reuse mens' neckties. Other options are quilts, wall hangings and pillows. I am sure you could look on Pinterest and find many more uses. It has been a busy Christmas season making t-shirt quilts. The quilt shown below was an interesting challenge because my client wanted a fleece fabric backing and fleece fringe on the front. I was skeptical at first, but I am almost always up for a challenge. This full size quilt was made from 30 sweatshirts belonging to a local football coach. I put black fleece on the back and folded extra fleece to the front to cut into a fringe. I have to say that it came out really nice. I have also made some t-shirt pillows and yoga mat bags. Both came out great.
I have to admit that I am a Goodwill and thrift store shopper. It is sad to see so many used wedding gowns in these stores. Pinterest has a lot of good ideas for reusing these heirlooms.
We just got back from a wonderful two week vacation back "home" to New England. It's funny that after living in North Carolina for over 24 years I still feel like Massachusetts is my home. It certainly tugs at my heart strings. Cape Cod will always be magical to me for many reasons, and the White Mountain region of New Hampshire is one of the places that I feel most at peace.
Last week we had to say goodbye to our Buddy. We rescued him 12 years ago, but I should say he rescued us. We were going through a very difficult time in our lives and Buddy was just what we needed. He was such a gentle giant and brought so much joy into our lives.
I was also asked by a lovely older lady to finish some work that was started by her grandmother and mother in the 1940s. She had a bag full of pieces for a double wedding ring quilt; the rings were sewn together by hand with the tiniest 1/8th of a seam. The fabrics were in pretty good shape, with just a little thinning and staining. I was able to sew them together to make a throw-size quilt. She also gave me a bag-full of crocheted squares. I think it was a popcorn pattern made with thin, off white cotton floss. The squares were beautifully crocheted by her mother about 80 years ago. I sewed them together to make this lovely bed runner. Last month Craig and I were lucky to visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.
Craig was asked to give a 3 hour class on his favorite topic, "The Tomato", and I was free to roam the gardens. There are many memories, as this was our favorite place to take our kids and parents during our years living in Pennsylvania. I think we came every season from when Caitlin was an infant to when we moved seven years later. The gardens and conservatory haven't changed much... they are still spectacular! |
